Saul Leiter - New York, 1950s

"Saul Leiter is a photographer and painter whose work was an integral part of the creation of the New York School. In his early years, Leiter was drawn to painting, and he had the opportunity to meet Richard Pousette-Dart. Leiter was encouraged by Pousette-Dart and W. Eugene Smith to try his hand at photography. He ventured into color photography in 1948. Today the photographs that Leiter has created are referenced in many colleges and universities in the United States, including the Art Institute of Chicago." [artnet]
